On the 1st of January 2007 I started with a $1000 bankroll with a goal to get to the biggest limits online as quickly as possible, while still observing good bankroll management. This blog should help me to control my bankroll and give me something to look back on when I reach the dizzying heights of the biggest games.

August 20th - Pissed off

So haven't written on this for almost 3 months. Over the summer I went to Vegas for two weeks to play the Main Event. I busted on the 2nd day with JJ vs AK with a short stack. Then I went to Greece for 3 weeks.

Since I got back I've been given a reminder of how fucking annoying online MTT's are. I just played 5 hours in Full Tilt's $535 FTOPS Main Event only to bust out on the bubble with 99 vs 55 on a table full of useless fish in a pot that would have given me a really decent shot at a big cash. FUCK!

A friend of mine suggested it would be a good idea to 8-table the Full Tilt $0.5-$1 games. I might give it a shot and see how I do. If not that then I guess I'll jump straight back into the grind that is $1-$2, playing accross the sites.

Flop comes KJJ with 2 spades. SB checks I check behind. Turn comes Qs. Goes check check. Rivers a blank and he bets pot, which is $4 since there's been no betting so far.
I proceed to FLAT CALL, not realising I've hit a royal flush. Worst part is that not only did he have KKxx and was slow-playing the nut full house, but we both had 200BB stacks.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?1130250 ---- I had a read on this player and felt pretty sure he didn't have a set. He actually had a bigger hand than I thought and didn't think he was strong enough to call my push after his initial check-raise. I was only a slight favorite when the money went in and was lucky to hold.

I had a few losing hands but none of them as big as these and none where I feel I made errors in my play.

I also played a couple of multi's but since winning the series ticket I've been running badly in all my multi's and I think I'll take a break from playing them until the start of June.

I paid for all my Vegas stuff this week (Hotel, flights and the ticket) so that's all sorted. I'm going to start playing live alot more at the different places round Glasgow. I used to play live all the time but stopped for a while because all my money was online but now i'm going to start up again.

Going to get some dinner and watch the Champions League final now, I might be back online later to play some Hold 'em. The games are alot better later at night so hopefully I can turn my holdem stats around starting tonight.

Then tonight I played the midnight tourney's on Party Poker, Pokerstars and Full Tilt. I final tabled the Party one and cashed in 7th for $998.75.

Multi's have been going so well that I've not really concentrated on cash games much, so after my exams I'm going to read up a bit, watch a few videos and hit the $1-$2 tables.

My exam is on Monday the 21st so after this weekend I'm going to have to put in a solid week of study. Which means not a lot of poker. I haven't even looked at uni stuff for a year so it's going to be a bit of a shock getting back into it, but I'll give it a good go.

I'm going to play the Stars million on Sunday (along with a couple of other Sunday major's) and that'll be my last big session until after the exam on the 21st, which I'll have to pass if I want to get into my final year.

It's more like venting, I just get annoyed when I get far in multi's and don't finish first. It's incredibly frustrating. Anyway, point is I'm venting, not complaining.

In the second one I was pretty sure the guy was 3-betting kinda light and in my humble opinion it was a terrible call.

I won a few hundred bucks at Cincinatti's (Glasgow poker club) recently so I'm that much further away from having to get a job. I'm heading back down tonight for a wee game.

That means that if I had not relied solely on poker for my income, I would have a $8800 bankroll by now.

I feel pretty sick about only having $1800 online right now.

Alot of people (including myself) have goals stating that they will never have to re-deposit. I am now giving myself a goal to not have to withdraw. I can't possibly rise up the limits at the pace I want if I have to keep taking out money. So, next time I need some cash, i'll be heading out to look for a job instead of putting dents in my online bankroll.

So far in April i've been really slacking off in the cash games. Here's my stats from the first 15 days:

I played 2 satellites to get into the Sunday major on Party. Lost them both. I then decided to just buy straight in for $215.

While I played that I had 4 tables of $100NL up and running. I lost $275 in these. Here are the highlights:

http://www.pokerhand.org/?1000774

A guy on Cardrunner's called Brian (Hookem148) is looking for two students to mentor. He was one of the two guy's that Taylor Caby took on as student's and is currently playing the $5-$10 limits. He is now looking for two student's himself and I decided to apply. It'd be pretty cool to be his student as i'd learn a lot more, a lot faster than I am now.

Anyway's from now on there will be no more direct buy-ins into the big multi's. After the gym tomorrow i'm going to put in a hardcore session at $50NL to get my confidence up a bit again.

My bankroll is now looking a bit shoddy. I've been toying with the idea of getting a part-tme job so I don't need to keep withdrawing from it. If I work a couple of nights a week at my old delivery job I could make £80 a week and wouldn't need to keep withdrawing. Although my last big withdrawl should keep me going for a bit.

I then pretty much stayed in my bed recovering until 9.30pm when I had a game of 6-a-side booked. This all went, I had a good time and came home. I registered for a couple multi's that started at midnight. I went for a quick shower, but when I got out the problems started.

I sat down at my computer screens and realised that my vision was slightly blurred. That's strange, I thought. It was about this time that I realised that I felt sick and had a really sore head. So I quickly realised that I needed my bed. I went to un-register from my tournies. However, it was know 11:46pm and this means that Party Poker won't allow me to un-register as I have to do this 15mins before it starts for some stupid reason.

I then proceed to have the most uncomfortable poker session i've ever had. Even though i'm sitting with my head in a bucket, thinking i'm bound to start throwing up as soon as I remove it, i'm getting some really good cards and end up with a decent stack. However, we now come to the really sickening part.

Some complete chump is sitting next to me and proceeds to make a horrible call pre-flop for all his chips with A8. So he takes half my stack. But that's ok, i'm sure to get them back of him soon. Wrong.

He then goes on to stack two other people and has now got a massive chip lead. Then, after 2 1/2 hours of hell we get to the bubble. 31 left, 30 get paid and as usual on Party, the play is of a pretty poor standard. After having built up an ok stack, (ok only being 15 blinds with the terrible blind structure they have), i'm actually feeling a bit better. It is then when the poker gods / the dealer / the logorithmic computer card generator decides to give me QQ in the BB.

"Oh fuck". I know whats going to happen before you could say, "Jesus, how long is this post gonna be"

You better believe the small blind picks up AA, and you better believe it was the same guy who I should have put out before. It's the first, and hopefully only, time that i've said, "that's so sick" and then thrown up straight after.

As a treat for those of you who managed to read all, or even half of this, i'm going to put up a funny picture of my good friend, HARRY HILL!

I had AA and he hit his two outer on the river. I struggled to stop myself from berating him for his stupidity but I somehow managed to hold it in.

I was left with 2600 chips with the blinds at 300-600 with a 75 ante. I pushed with 89o from MP and got called by 2's. I flopped an open ender but didn't hit. The river was a 2 just to rub it in.

Previous to these two hands I lost a big pot with 1010 vs A6s when a weak player came after my blinds with A6s and saw fit to call my push over the top of him. This was for the table chip lead but I lost this also. This was clearly not my tournament.

For the time being MTT's are definatley going to be my game of choice. I feel i'm playing them really well and it won't be too long until I pick up a few decent scores.

They require more patience, longer periods sitting at the computer and an ability to deal with tough beats in bad situations (i.e on the bubble). However, I feel comfortable in these games for now. If the U.S legislation changes I will certainly be going back to cash games sharpish, but for now i'm happy playing my nightly multi's. I may even up the number's i'm playing daily.

Withdrew $2500 to pay for my summer holidays. I'm going on a mediterranean cruise with 3 friends where I plan to get very drunk and will see lots of beaches.

Just finished a $75 multi on Full Tilt and busted out 6th for just over $800. I'm pretty raging because the five other players that were left were uttur fish. On the final table I was ruling but lost twice with QQ.

First one I flopped top set on a Q69 board and got it all in vs 78 which promptly rivered a straight. I then end up all in, for a pot that would get me back the chip lead, with QQ vs J10s pre-flop. When he flops his straight I bust out in 6th leaving the 5 donks to fight it out for the meaningful amounts of money.

Went to St. Andrews and it turned out to be really good apart from me losing in the tourney and getting food poisoning. I was pretty happy with the way I played. In the first hour I got all in pre-flop with QQ vs 88 and lost which took half my stack away (The other guy had already been involved in several pots). I then hit middle set and got it all in vs a guy with top set. I was left with 1900 from the 10,000 starting stack with the blinds 100-200. I managed to play a good short stack game and ended up getting through to the second day with an average stack. Unfortunately the structure sucked and by the final day the average stack was only 10 BB's. Ended up going out on a blind steal from the button.

Last night, once I got home I played 8 tables of $100NL on Party and quickly lost $200. I decided I wasn't in the right mindset so quit and hung out with some friends instead.

Today I played $200NL on Full Tilt and lost $219.20. I ran pretty badly but i'm not upset at how I played the cards I was getting. I also entered the Party $100 midnight tournament and came 2nd for around $3700. The players that were in it were shockingly bad and I pretty much played ABC poker, picking up chips pretty easily and getting paid off on my big hands.

When it got heads up the guy I was up against was hitting everything under the sun and I lost pretty quickly. In the 24 hands we played he flopped the nut straight, the second nut flush and two pair more than once. And here's the hand i went out on:

http://www.pokerhand.org/?961793

The overbet on the turn put me off as I had seen him do this with air twice before we were heads-up. He had also been betting into me on the flop everytime he hit top pair. Ah well, can't win them all but it always upsets me when I come second.

Anyways, April has now started and i'm going to have to decide if I want to take anything out of my bankroll, and what my goals are going to be for the end of the month.

Currently my bankroll is at $5560.25

I missed the fisrt 60 mins because I went downstairs and forgot about it. When I came back upstairs and noticed I was sitting out a tourney, I had 1600 chips and the blinds were 150-300. I promptly went all in with K9s and sucked out AK and then won a AK vs QQ race and was up to an average stack. I ended up coming 14th when I pushed with AJo into the blinds and ran into KK. I got $77 back.

On the cash tables I got in 886 hands and won $318.51, which I was happy about. Didn't take much longer than 2 hours. I still can't seem to put in long spells playing. Can't remember the last time I played for more than 3 hours straight. I'm going to try and up my hours for the next few days so I can hopefully bump up my bankroll before I leave for St. Andrews on the 30th. If I can get to $3400 i'll be pretty much even for the month, although I wanted to start April with $4k.

Here are some hands for today:

http://www.pokerhand.org/?939542

http://www.pokerhand.org/?939551

Here I got my money in bad against a super aggressive player who I thought was 3 and 4-betting light....WRONG.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?939554

http://www.pokerhand.org/?939560

Here are some losers:

On the turn here I thought I had the correct odds. I looked into it and turns out I didn't, was close though:

http://www.pokerhand.org/?939565

Here I was on the phone to a friend and wasn't really paying attention, I didn't even remember the hand until after I looked through PokerTracker and I was like whaaaaat?

http://www.pokerhand.org/?939573

Bankroll: $2868.69

-Richard

Edit: I then decided to play again a bit later. After about 2 mins I got this hand on one of the tables. After this I realised I really couldn't be bothered and decided to go to bed.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?940182

Was all pretty standard. Here's the biggest hand:

http://www.pokerhand.org/?937475

On the 25th I started off by playing qualifiers to major tournies on Party Poker and Full Tilt. I got into both pretty quickly, only having to play 3 satellites total to get into both.

In the Party major I came around 400th out of 1500 with 200 getting paid. The blinds were getting high and I went out on a pretty standard 50-50.

In the Full Tilt tourney I built up a good stack, but with 600 left out of the 2100 entrants I took a huge hit when I raised it up with KK pre-flop and got called by a guy with 36o. Flop came 652 and we got it all in. He hit a 3 for 2 pair and I was very badly crippled. From there I doubled up once but then went out with 1010 vs AQ.
I played it like a complete donk. I raised pre-flop and got 1 caller. The flop came JJ8 and I checked with the intention of raising. I felt sure he would bet any two cards here since he was an over aggro fish, and had raised every time anyone checked to him. I was wrong and he checked. The turn brought a Q, which gave me a gutshot and a flush draw. I bet out a little less than pot, commiting myself to any raise. He did just that and fliped over AQ. I missed my draws and went out, annoyed and frustrated at my own incompetence.

In the cash games I played whilst in the tournies I made $221 in 1 hour 40 mins having played 754 hands. Here's the highlight hands:

http://www.pokerhand.org/?937478

Ths is my favorite:

http://www.pokerhand.org/?937480

http://www.pokerhand.org/?937501

And the biggest pot lost:

http://www.pokerhand.org/?937504

I withdrew $600 today to tide me over for a while and to fund my St. Andrews trip. It's annoying to have to take money out from my bankroll all the time as it makes it alot harder to climb the levels. However, it would be more annoying if I had to go and get a job, so I guess it's the lesser of two evils.

In the cash games I played 554 hands and won $126.91. I then played a $55 multi at 8pm where I cashed, getting back $122. I also played a $33 shootout at midnight and got back $233.10.

Nothing too exciting but another winning day. I've not been playing many hours of cash games so tomorrow i'm going to try and play for at least 4 hours. Hopefully i'll feel up to it.

I played in a few multi's which had some really bad players in them. In all four I played I went out close to or on the bubble every time. People seem to be willing to make really loose calls nearing the bubble. I pushed with 10 BB's with AKs and got a call from the button for more than half his stack with 33. I also lost with AA vs JJ, AK vs AQ etc etc.

On the cash tables I actually really enjoyed playing today. I still lost $3.44 but it felt like I was running the table alot more than usual, which is a good thing. Here are some winning and losing hands:

Winning

Here's a benefit of having 3-bet light a few times earlier.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?926743

I played this next hand a bit tricky on the turn. After he flat calls the c-bet on the flop I feel pretty sure he's trying to show down a small pair. If he was flushing I think he would have pushed the flop especially as his draw would most likely contain two overcards. I checked the turn hoping he would see this as a sign of weakness (i.e KK/QQ) and he would try to represent an Ace. Alas, he didn't, but I still took down a nice pot.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?926716

Here I got a nice turn. After this hand I took some abuse from the super passive player that I was in the pot with, but it was his own fault for letting me see the turn. If I don't hit the 9 on the turn then I shut down and get a free card for the river.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?926751

Losing

Here I think I could've saved myself $66 on the river and was very close to folding but I talked myself into a call. He could've been flushing.........

http://www.pokerhand.org/?926697

In this hand I could have lost a lot more money. The SB slow played his hand all the way. The river bet I made set the guy behind me all-in as he was short. The fold on the river after the re-shove from the SB saved me $80. Turned out to be a pretty easy fold. Maybe I should have just checked the river but it's pretty hard to put someone on a flush draw. The SB could've had a better 5 but I didn't think he would slowplay it to the extent he did.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?926757

Hardly seems worth the effort although it was only an hour.

I withdrew $1000 to put into a new site called Cake Poker. Apparently it's where all the fish have gone to, or so i've been told. I'll also get a $500 bonus that I should be able to work off quite quickly, as well as 33% rakeback.

EDIT: Change of plan, $500 on Cake, $500 on PartyPoker to see what it's like. I hear German's can't play poker, plus it'll be closer to my timezone.

ANOTHER EDIT: Forget Cake Poker, from now on I'm going to be splitting my bankroll between Party and Full Tilt after hearing so many good things about the standard of play at Party.
Seems to me that even though Pokerstars and Full Tilt are still accepting U.S players, it's only the good one's that can be bothered going through the hassle of depositing and withdrawing on these sites. At least on PartyPoker it's easy and so still attracts recreational players. Looks like i'm going to be targeting fishy Europeans as opposed to fishy Americans from now on.

SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY

On Sunday I played a couple of the major tourney's with no success. I then went on to have a losing session at the cash tables also.

I lost $290.65 playing 4 tables. Here are some of the hands:

http://www.pokerhand.org/?920538

http://www.pokerhand.org/?920541

I won 1 pot over $20 and apart from that I seemed to just be playing lots of small pots, of which I was losing more than I was winning. Here's the decent pot I won:

http://www.pokerhand.org/?920546

MONDAY

I played a few multi's but mostly cash games today. I was playing 4 tables of cash and just opening up multi's when I felt like it. I was concentrating on the cash games so ended up just playing really tight in the multi's and not really paying attention to them. Maybe that's why I didn't cash in any.

On the cash tables I got in 2,168 hands and made $191. I spent alot of time jumping around Full Tilt trying to find a decent table to sit at. I really hope that the repeal of the US gaming legislation that was passed works. If it does then hopefully online poker can get back to where it was half a year ago and I can start progressing up the levels a bit quicker.

Here are some of the good and not so good hands from today's session:

Good

http://www.pokerhand.org/?920571

http://www.pokerhand.org/?920572

In this hand I called the 3-bet intending to outplay him on the flop. He was 3 betting from the blinds EVERY time someone raised it up and continuing to bet out at every flop. A few hands ago a similar situation came up where I missed but floated him on the flop, managing to force him off on the turn when he checked it. His range here was huge:

http://www.pokerhand.org/?920573

http://www.pokerhand.org/?920591

Not So Good

Here i'm pretty sure I made the right fold:

http://www.pokerhand.org/?920596

http://www.pokerhand.org/?920601

In a week and a half i'm going to go up to St. Andrews to play in the UK Student Poker Championships. Last time I went there was some decent side games for when I busted out with KK vs K9.
I'm going to have to withdraw some money before I go so i'm going to try and build up the bankroll online before then. I definatley don't want leave less than $2000 online.
Hopefully i'll win some money at St. Andrews and be able to re-invest some of the money i'm going to withdraw.

I ended up winning a $10 re-buy tourney out of 57 people for a $612.50 return. At the final table I got a big stack and I feel I played it really well. I was controlling the table and heads up I completely dominated the guy who played way too tight when it got short handed.
I played a few more MTT's during the day but had no success.

At midnight I played a couple of multi's and a couple of cash games. When I went out the multi's I ended up opening up another cash table and 3 tabling 50c-$1. I did pretty well and ended the session with $179.60 profit. Here's a couple of big hands:

http://www.pokerhand.org/?909224

http://www.pokerhand.org/?909225

And here's the biggest pot I lost. I played it pretty weak. The villain was very aggressive and I think once I decided to take him on in the hand with that flop it was always going to be a big pot.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?909231

After that I played 3 more multi's; A satellite to a wsop/wpt event, another $10 re-buy and a $24 Limit HORSE tourney.

Firstly I went out the satellite. I raised from the cutoff with A10 and got pushed on. I felt I was ahead of his range as he'd 3-bet a few times and I had raised in position frequently. He had 88 and I went out.

Next, the HORSE tournament. This was the first time i'd played HORSE and I was just giving it a go. Other than one other tourney, (of Razz, which I final tabled out of 88 people), i'd never played any other type of tournament apart from Hold 'em.
Having said this, I did manage to final table this tournament....and not only did I final table it, but I was 2nd in chips going into the final, and became chip leader within 3 hands of it having started.
I then proceeded dominate the table, getting heads up easily. There was a minor glitch when my Dad disconnected the internet connection, not realising I was up at 6.45am, but that was the only time the guy I was facing could get any chips off me. So I ended up taking top prize out of for $1,160. Sweet.

Finally, in the $10 re-buy I managed to get a big stack fairly soon after the re-buy period when I got all in with AK on an Ace-rag-rag flop against Q8. After that I just kept my stack around the 30,000 mark (about twice the average) until I won another good pot when I got all in pre-flop with KK vs 46o.
I got down to the last ten players, the final table bubble, sitting in 3rd place with 280,000 chips. From there, however, there was a series of unfortunate events. Firstly, I lost a huge race with AK vs QQ which would have given me the chip lead. Secondly, I push in on a short stack with A8 only to get insta-called by AK and lose. And finally, I shove all in on the blinds with 66 and get called by KK to get knocked out in 10th. Not so sweet.

It's know 7.45am and I feel pretty disappointed, as I always do when I get close to a decent result. Nevertheless, it's been a good day and i'm ever closer to getting back to a break-even month.

I lost $5 at cash, came 3rd in the sng for $36 back and I haven't cashed in any of the multi's....yet.

As I type i'm in 3 multi's. The $11k g'teed, the $22k g'teed and the $19k g'teed. We're on the bubble in the $11k g'teed, the $19k is in the middle stages and I haven't doubled up yet and.........I just went out the $22k when I pushed on a habitual limper with A4s and got called by KQo and lost.

Seems like the night comes down to the 2 remaining tournies.

I'll edit when I know the results.

Bankroll: $1091.10

Edit: I ended up cashing in the $11k g'teed, coming in 12th place for $152.97. I lost most of my chips in a race with 1010 vs KJo. A guy pushed into my blind for 44,000 chips when the blinds were at 1,500-3,000. It's not too bad a push but I think he had too big a stack to be open pushing. I think the call was right as I could have easily been dominating him and I was miles ahead of his range.
It's pretty annoying because we were just getting to the stage where the money increases start getting meaningful and I was in a really good seat at a really soft table. I feel I could have got to the final table with a heapload of chips if I have won that pot.

I think I am going to start playing more multi's from now on as it seems to be my best game. I'll mostly play the $26 games on Full Tilt as well as satellite's to the bigger games like the $163. I'm also going to be playing satellite's from tomorrow to try and get into the $400k g'teed on Sunday.

In this one the villain had 3-bet me tons and I felt pretty sure I was ahead pre-flop. Wrong. But a good result.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?902588

Here I could feel he had a set, but still couldn't lay it down.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?902599

Here, when he raised me on the turn, I put him most likely on J10. But I talked myself into thinking he could have A8 and I could always fold to a big river bet.
And yet, the river came and I still call. Bad play by me.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?902609

Something I really need to work on is folding when I feel i'm behind. I seem to find it acceptable to lose a stack when I flop 2 pair and someone has a straight, or if I flop an overpair and someone has hit trips. It's just not good poker and it's not good for my ever diminishing bankroll.

I withdrew some money which leaves me with $1430.45 in my bankroll, all on Full Tilt.
This is enough for the new limits i'm playing and is what i'm going to build on.

I thought i'd add a screenshot of my Feb and March results from pokertracker. Hopfully I can put together a decent run and rescue March.

I'm going to take a cautious approach to my bankroll management and here's a chart I found on someone's else's blog that I like the look of.

LEVEL STARTING BUY-INS LEVEL TOTAL
NL BANKROLL WON PROFIT BANKROLL

$10 $200 30 $300 $500

$25 $500 32 $800 $1,300

$50 $1,300 30 $1,500 $2,800

$100 $2,800 34 $3,400 $6,200

$200 $6,200 40 $8,000 $14,200

$400 $14,200 45 $18,000 $32,200

$600 $32,200 30 $18,000 $50,200

It's designed to get him up to $50K and it's what i'm going to use. So, until I get my bankroll up to $2800, I am officially a $50NL player.

Off to the tables I go. I think i'll update after the session.

It's time for a battle plan, and here it is:

I'm going to put $2000 into Full Tilt which is going to be the only site I play on for the rest of the month. The goal is to make it to $4000 by the end of March, meaning if all goes well, my bankroll is going to be back where it started at the beginning of the month, and I will also have made a little profit since my bankroll now is a little over $2000.

I have 20 days until the end of the month, including today. Which means I must average a buy-in a day at 50c-$1 to achieve my goal. Good luck to me.

New Bankroll: $2000
